Proud to announce that my first feature as a director was acquired for domestic distribution and announced in Deadline:
“Ahead of Cannes, home entertainment and theatrical distributor Uncork’d Entertainment has acquired Suburban Cowboy. The thriller hails from Ryan Colucci and Grammy-nominated EDM artist Dragan Roganovic (aka Dirty South).
Written by Colucci, the gritty caper follows a drug dealer on Long Island who finds himself over his head when one of his soldiers robs a connection to ruthless Serbian gangsters. When the debt falls on his shoulders he is forced to take drastic measures. Frank Raducz Jr, Alandrea Martin, Zoran Radanovich and Matty Finocchio star.
Suburban Cowboy, which screened at last year’s Austin Film Festival, reunites Colucci and Dirty South. Colucci produced With You, a film directed by the artist based on his album of the same name.
Paradigm has been spearheading domestic sales on the film with Galen Christy’s High Octane Pictures handling international.”
I am finally emerging from the deep, dark and secluded throes of post-production for Suburban Cowboy. I had promised to bring updates, but with little money and even less hours in a day I found it very hard. Sorry about that.
With about 2-3 weeks left for 5.1 mix and a final color session/film grain… I am proud to announce that the hand drawn animated title sequence for the film has been selected to compete at SXSW for Excellence in Title Design Competition.
Our tiny film (relatively speaking) will be going up against films and television shows such as Spectre, Avengers Age of Ultron,Crimson Peak and Daredevil. It is quite an honor and I couldn’t be happier for Zsombor Huszka, who brought them to life.
Every few weeks I say that I will get back on the blogging horse, but I keep failing you. I have good reasons though – I am in post-production on two films. One of them, Suburban Cowboy, is my first as a director. Three graphic novels are in production… And I’m still trying to get the word out about R.E.M. and Harbor Moon. So, things have been a bit hectic lately – which is a good thing.
Today I wanted to share an animation test/character progression and design for a music video that is in production. It is being done by Zsombor Huszka…
Russell Foster discussed this very topic in his TEDtalk – a topic that is clearly very near and dear to my heart, as I wrote a graphic novel about a scientist trying to beat sleep (the drama/thriller R.E.M.).
Thanks to the good folks at FCPWorks, during NAB 2015, we (Dragan Roganovic and myself) went to Vegas to give a talk on our post-workflow for Suburban Cowboy. Apparently not everyone is shooting 6k on a micro-budget…
FCPWorks was offering a special NAB Final Cut Pro X Presentation Suite. This served as the epicenter of Final Cut Pro X at NAB 2015. They presented the latest products, workflows, opinions, and opinion makers in a series of curated presentations. I’m proud to say that we were part of that select group.
I just realized that it has been four months since my last blog post. Whoa. I never intended to take such a break – but I guess the film and other projects caught up to me. I’m now coming out of my film haze and entering full-on post-production.
We shot Suburban Cowboy in March over 16 days (we were efficient enough that we shaved a full day off of production)… and right after that I went to Miami for Winter Music Conference/Ultra, Coachella, NAB in Vegas to speak about our post-production workflow, back to Coachella and finally to New York to grab some B-roll and see my family. It’s been a bit of a whirlwind since I moved back to LA in November. And tomorrow I head to Melbourne to finish the edit there over the month of May. So I guess I lied – I won’t be coming out of my film haze until June.
The good news – the shoot went great. We spent a lot of time casting and it paid off. We never set out to cast names, but the best person for the part. The characters in the script were really specific – the edit is at the halfway point and I believe you will all find they are unique on screen as well. I’m excited to start posting stills and updates on everything that is going on…
